Why Fridays and Windows Don’t Mix

You know the commercial that says “Every day is Friday?” Well, if that were true, I’d jump out the window. I hate Fridays.
Yes, I realize I am writing this post on a Thursday. However, as I get ready to shut down for the night, fear already has crept into my heart a little bit.
You see, every Friday afternoon, my work laptop likes to tell me it has updates to install. Friday is the day I am just dying to get out of the office, and I see the stupid update icon every. single. Friday. It never fails. 6:30 rolls around, and I’m desperate to go home, so I press shut down only to see the magic screen: Update 1 of 4.
4 updates?! And it’s always the last one that takes forever to finish, too. Windows teases me with updates 1-3, only to wait forever to finish update 4.
I would just leave it and go home anyway, but my laptop has been quirky enough to not shut itself off automatically, so I am forced to wait to make sure I don’t leave it on in some post-crash stasis.
This happened with XP, and now, it has happened with Vista. AND THEN SOME. 18 Optional updates now? Are you kidding? It’s like Microsoft has it out for me to end my work week on such a lame, sour note that I rush out for the strongest possible gin cocktail. Sure, I’d love to update my Real video player on a Friday. I clearly have nothing better to do. I’d love to sit and watch the status bar tick tock tick tock all the way to the end. I come out of the office grayer and more hunched over each Friday, thanks to waiting for this infernal machine to update hold ‘em poker. thanks.
can’t wait to see what updates come my way tomorrow. pray for me.
