Concert Review: Vampire Weekend at the 9:30 Club (December 2)
So, Vampire Weekend came to town for two nights. I caught them on the second night, and they made no attempts to mask the fact that their set lists were identical for both shows. Can you really blame them, though? One album and a few extra tracks floating around made for a quick concert (they did manage to play two new tracks, along with “Ladies of Cambridge” and a Fleetwood Mac cover).
Just how quick, you ask? I had two meetings yesterday that lasted longer than the concert. By themselves. The whole show, including the encore, lasted 55 minutes. Not too hard to believe, either, given that their average song length is about 45 seconds. Anyway, it was exactly what I had imagined — catchy music played a little too loud and a little too fast for their own good (and not as tight as their album — again, not a surprise here). The second half featured considerably more energy, and ending the show with “Walcott” was a great night cap.
It was a good time, overall, and the hipster crowd normally seen at 9:30 was very welcoming to the frat house fans who trekked all the way from Georgetown, though I doubt with open arms.
Unsophisticated rating: 7/10
A short review for a short concert. What an idea.
